Happy Friday, everyone! There will be no newsletter on Monday in observance of Labor Day, but before you start your holiday weekend, I wanted to send my weekly post for paid subscribers.
This week, I’m sharing my latest installment of the Wake Up To Politics Book Club, an interview with Yuval Levin.
Levin is the Director of Social, Cultural, and Constitutional Studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a conservative think tank, and the author of “American Covenant: How the Constitution Unified Our Nation―and Could Again.”
“American Covenant” is a beautifully written meditation on the Constitution, the political culture it tried to set up for us, and how we are and aren’t living up to it. “This is a book about America,” it starts, “and therefore, it is a hopeful book.” It lives up to that promise. I found that it challenged, expanded, and clarified my thinking about the Constitution and about our current political moment, and ultimately, left me feeling better about both.
Above is a video of my interview with Levin, which touches on the Constitution, Congress, how we can reform and improve our political system, what Donald Trump and Woodrow Wilson have in common, and more. Below, I’ve included some more thoughts on the book, in connection with some of the stories that have been dominating the news in recent weeks.
Both are available only for paid subscribers, as a “thank you” for your support. My goal with Wake Up To Politics is to help readers better understand the political process, whether it’s blue slips or jobs reports or the One Big Beautiful Bill. I wouldn’t be able to do that without the help of paid subscribers — so, if you appreciate that work, I hope you’ll consider signing up. Plus, you get access to the full range of my content: Q&As, Book Club interviews, and other special perks.
Thanks so much for reading, and have a restful Labor Day.
I. What is executive power?
Sen. Todd Young (R-IN) said something really odd this week.
