Smart analysis and good example of why I always read Gabe's work in spite of occasional disagreements with tone and slant. These are fun and interesting times for astute observers like Gabe (and his readers)!

Thank you for this analysis. Just out of curiosity, is this a Trump veto or Miller veto? I just don’t think Trump has the interest, attention span, or intelligence to understand what he’s vetoing and he certainly didn’t write those justifications. Is this the kind of thing if he’s asked about it, he’ll say he doesn’t know or isn't familiar with it?

Excellent reporting and commentary. I’d be careful in using the term “pet project.” It suggests a pejorative use of the word pet. Although they’re in a Congress member’s district, these projects are quite often worthwhile and needed, especially for something like clean drinking water. May be better to leave the word pet out of the description, even though the term may simply be a use of a phrase that has become a term of art in discussing congressional bills.

Hi Clyde, that’s fair! Meant it more to suggest that these projects are important to them on an individual basis, but agree it carries a pejorative meaning that might not have been appropriate here.

Thank-you for the very informative article. The question I have, is Mr. Trump losing control of parts of the Republican Party? As an old hermit I would like to know. (Just my humble opinion but I sure hope Mr. Trump's lock on the Republican Party is beginning to crumple. Hope I haven't upset anyone.)

I hope the drinking water pipeline veto override passes. I learned about this veto in our local news and it seems quite blatant that the veto pertained to the Tina Peters “pardon.” What she did, as county clerk of Mesa county (ruby red, no less) compromised our rock solid election system. I’m no fan of Ms. Boebert, but I do applaud her for supporting the needs of her constituents.

Great story. This was totally off my radar until now. I think that if Congress can muster the votes to put clean drinking water for 50,000 people and flood prevention for an entire indigenous tribe ahead of partisan bs, it will be a watershed moment.

To everyone who said Trump would lose the House in 2026, you were right, I just didn’t realize he would lose it in *January* of 2026

Unfortunately most of the spineless GOP caucus voted against overriding both vetoes.

Let’s summarize your bloatey analysis. Trump’s playing politics. Rule 1 in politics-make the opposition pay. The opposition is gonna win one because , for good reason and cause, Trump’s going to be over-ruled by Congress that has ceded powers to the Imperial Presidency since Reagan? Nixon? Roosevelt? But this time , over Trump’s foolish pettiness THE CONGRESS WILL RISE UP AND SLAY THE TRUMP MONSTER. YAY!

I mean , good on them. It’s about time.

And as you opined, nobody cares. It’s a minor political setback, with obvious good results, that may yet fit into a larger pattern of effective Trump political strategies.

I mean it’s possible.

If these are the quality of victories that characterise THE OPPOSITION’S notions of victory…. I mean , Really?

I asked Gemini A1 whether clean water projects or flood prevention were paid for by federal or state/local funds. Here is the response:

Clean water projects in the United States are funded through a partnership between federal and state governments, though the vast majority of the long-term financial burden actually falls on local governments and utilities.

Flood prevention in the United States is a shared responsibility, but the majority of the funding for large-scale projects comes from the federal government, while state and local governments handle smaller projects and pay a portion of the costs for federal ones.

The Colorado claim seems pretty flimsy. For 63 years and counting the ground water use has been functioning and it sounds as if the state is reneging on a deal that was already pretty sweet.

Again, according to Gemini here are some relevant facts about Osceola Camp:

• Population: It is described as being home to several families of the Miccosukee Tribe.

• Structures: The camp includes approximately 25 chickee huts (traditional structures with thatched roofs) and 15 storage structures.

“Up to $14,000,000” for these structures seems pretty steep. The Miccosukee Indian Reservation is divided into three districts, in total bout 82,000 acres. The tribe also controls 300,000 acres of the Everglades through perpetual leases and runs a gaming facility.

If I had a veto power, I would use it on these projects too.

Gabe: Are you sure about the claim that a successful veto today would be the first one since 2016? Wasn't the NDAA 2021 vetoed by then outgoing POTUS Trump and successfully overriden?

Coupled with the shooting in Minneapolis, this administration has become rather rogue in a not so good way. Please let us know if the House overrides the veto. I'm hopeful ( not sure why) he will do the right thing in Venezuela - but time will tell on that one...
