I think what you are missing is that the establishment wing of the party has been espousing these ideas for years but don’t deliver. Voters want someone they perceive as a fighter. The fact that Stevens was supported by millions in PAC support fed the perception that she would not truly rock the boat, whereas El-Sayed seems as if he would. Medicare for All is a big deal and if the Democrats had eliminated the filibuster under Obama we could have it now.
