On the subject of each side attributing extreme views to the other, the press could stop this. Often lazy reporting contributes to this. Rather than be specific about who believes this or that, it is easier to say Republicans or Democrats. Reporters should be called out for this.

Thanks for the Steve Simon book recommendation, have added it to my Goodreads for a future read. Also thanks for the link to Imaginary Enemies, very insightful article about political polarization. Restacking the link to share with others. https://www.stevestewartwilliams.com/p/imaginary-enemies?

Peeked in on your dad's Substack, and like you, he's a skilled writer and his passion for Bruce Springsteen shines through, as well as his pride and love of you, his son, in his article about the concert you attended together in DC in March 2023. Hope he has a good Father's day. You will never regret any time that you can spend with him, because it's always sooner than you expect, that time runs out. I will always remember the last Father's Day I had with my dad, and a month later at age 67 he was unexpectedly gone from an aneurysm.

I always enjoy your "Before I go" closing article, and this one was very moving. Thanks for being here on Substack, at last; so glad you are here!

I can’t recall how I got on your list but I’m glad I did. Sharp writing— something we’re badly in need of in this historic moment.

Congratulations on your graduation and on your choice of self employment. I count on your writing for a more level headed and positive view of our political situation.

Unrelated to this specific newsletter, my morning viewings of “Meet the Press” and “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” led to this observation: I know each show wants to present a balanced point of view, but as I watched the back-and-forth exchange between host Peter Alexander and Rep. Byron Donalds and later between host Jonathan Karl and Sen. Tim Scott, it struck me that the only purpose of having those two guests make an appearance was to show that there is no point in having those two guests make an appearance. They don’t answer questions; they spew propaganda. Is there some way they can be better held to account? What a shabby waste of everyone’s time. Anyone else feel that way?

Nikki Haley has said she personally will vote for Trump (she views him as the less of two evils ... which is insane but that's a different issue) but she has not endorsed him, and says he needs to win over her supporters: https://19thnews.org/2024/05/nikki-haley-voting-trump-election-2024/

I don’t disagree with the study findings about how both sides perceive more drastic disagreements than exist. But that doesn’t answer why apparently sane and generally intelligent folks will take their moderate views and still vote for extremists. BTW I’m about as liberal as they come but I don’t support defunding the police or ending free speech unless it is either inciting violence or grossly untrue (for the latter I would only require facts be be given equal prominence on any generally available/utilized platform, e.g., Facebook, TikTok, instagram, all using the airwaves).

In your day-by-day review of the week, I thin it make the individual items stand out if they were bullet points. Enjoying your new venture. Glenn Keitel
