Wow! A masterfully written article Gabe. As I left an appointment just 20 minutes ago I checked my email and saw yours. I started to glance over it while getting ready to leave and after two sentences had to turn off my vehicle, put down the windows and read. Your enthusiasm, voice and skill all absolutely shine here.
I too rarely leave a bookstore empty-handed and now I have a very good reason to stop at my favorite on the way home. I’m going to buy or order this book.
Isn’t serendipity wonderful? Finding the book on the one day you return during a near identical time in politics and being a journalist writing about said time…these kind of moments delight me. Thanks for sharing yours and your own wonderment at how it unfolded.
Thank you so much! A true “driveway moment” — what more could a writer ask for! I’m glad you appreciated the serendipity as much as I did. I definitely recommend the book next time you’re at a bookstore!
Gabe, This is one of the most intelligent articles I've read on the current Joe Biden situation and how it relates to history. I have supported you with one off donations in the past, but this article prompted me to subscribe - and to post it on my FB page. You are a very talented young man and I can't wait to watch your career. I am sure Washington is considering your words today with great introspection and admiration for you. I look forward to reading you daily - keep up the fantastic work!
Absolutely fantastic read your best so far. I have only been reading your post since you came to substack, many thanks to Chris Cilliza for recommending you. You are wise beyond your years and clearly have a great future ahead of you in political analysis. I look forward to reading your takes on the crazy few months we are all about to live through.
The saddest and most torturous reality for President Biden… “I personally feel that if you take this step it will help in the long term for people to see better all that you have accomplished in your administration.”
Good article. But when are we going to be reading about stuff getting done again? Quite frankly I’m so sick and tired of reading and hearing about Biden & Trump. I think I would have enjoyed this newsletter so much more if I hadn’t been reading about these two all damned week.
Still have much appreciation for your work. I’d just like to get back to the politics, what’s being done and not the candidates.
Hi Rachel, I hear you. Right now, it’s hard to ignore the two biggest stories — which are undeniably Trump and Biden, after one survived an assassination attempt and the other struggles to survive an intraparty coup. But I get where you’re coming from and I try to mix up my coverage so it isn’t the same thing, day in and day out. As soon as things quiet down a bit, I promise you I’ll be covering what gets done in Washington and other policy stories alongside news from the campaign!
I’m so glad you decided to continue, Gabe. Lately I skip over all election news except your newsletter. I’m really loved this one. I sincerely hope Biden has friends and advisors who are also reading you. This discussion is powerful.

It’s ordered! I’m looking forward to reading it.
Kudos for your best writing and commentary yet.
I've seen others I like better, but Gabe is always great.
Thank you so much, Susan.
Gabe - your best work to date. You never cease to amaze...
Thank you, Kevin — that’s very kind.

Thanks bud. Much appreciation and respect.
Thanks for that. So interesting to look at historical parallels.
