A theory (not necessarily the correct one, but an interesting one). Trump knows he'll lose in the courts on this. But he's gone back to getting the press to focus on the shiny object. All day long on the radio shows I listen to (mostly the POTUS channel on Sirius XM) were talking about the press ban. And they weren't talking about the Iran war or the economy, or the Epstein files (heck, when was the last time there was any serious coverage of the files anyway even though there is still some action there). But I think the thing he wanted to distract us from mostly is his lousy polls.
This is the nexus where the freedom of the press, (ironic that it's the absolutely the only occupation that is mentioned in the wording of the Constitution) the will and whims of one person and the necessity of people to know exactly what their government is doing at any one time. Without a free press, there is no democracy. That's a known, long known.
There would only be lip service to any real trust towards factual knowledge of what government is doing, much like Russia or China or any other authoritarian government without a free press pool.
In this Trump instance, it's more of his ability to create deflection from untoward issues within his personal sphere of influence, the kleptocracy... or deflect from a constant irritation of the Trump-Epstein files that continue unabated... The real criminality from his past. But, as it was noted earlier in the day on NPR, it's also to create some sort of safe space for the pure
corruption (involving also, incompetence.) and in my mind that is foremost.
Too, the most ridiculous Trump Arch rationale can be seen as another reason to hide truth from an active press corps. His whims and crackpot ideas are myriad and ever increasing as fever dreams and fantasy Then, compounding the facts around his rapidly declining mental health, his oddly hidden physical conditions are too, glaringly evident, more and more every day and can be reported on as they present and must be, by the free press within the White House.
All emerging issues need a free press to monitor in real time. In the White House and present 24/7/365.
The same exercise of that dogged and rigorous pursuit of the truth that was the relationship of the press to a presidency, and too, was the cause and nexus for the takedown of Richard Nixon.
We necessarily need to know if, in fact, our President is a crook, so we can act upon those facts.

Great article today, Gabe. Thanx for such excellent writing.
Ditto!

That great necessity must never be diminished.
The whole main stream press walked out on the Hegseth debacle. The main stream press supported CNN's lawsuit over Acosta.
The press didn't interview TR. He "interviewed" them. Read the book "Theodore Roosevelt For the Defense" He took over a whole courtroom
How's that working for you Don?
And Helen Thomas wept.
You are ridiculously low IQ.
You ok Phil?
@LowIQLowEQ Erin.
Stfu. It’s only a few of them. The press pool is huge. They barely fit in the room. Now fuck off.
An immature ninth grader evidently hacked into your computer, you may want to change your password....
Trump will not accept elections he loses. And he will get reassurance from many Republicans.
Where are Bob and Ray when we need them?
