I simply despise the current republican regime because they lack character and bravery. My father was a Lt. instructor pilot in the South Pacific, contracted malaria and then as a result of the malaria, arthritis of the spine, during WW2 . His brother William Bealke received the silver star from Patton while on duty in France for bravery. I am relieved they are not alive today to see this narcissistic, pathological liar lead us down a despicable and destructive path. Policy differences are acceptable but lack of character and a lack of empathy are not, and if we do not find away out of this current disaster we are in danger that will have lasting repercussions. I never thought we would come to this and I am happy to say I can look my grandchildren in the eye having never voted for Trump
One very frightening possibility, which doesn't seem to have entered your analysis lately, is that Trump isn't interested in long lasting legislation because he intends to get rid of the legislative branch. There was already a bill to allow Trump a third term- I don't think right now that that's possible, but it does look like the groundwork is being laid for Trump to be able to cement his legacy by doing away with, or at least severely limiting elections. The current plan to require voters names on their IDs to match their birth certificates already disenfranchises a lot of women. Hopefully you are right, and none of this sticks for more than four years, but I think that if we aren't at least considering the possibility that it will stick, we might be blindsided later.
Gabe, your fantasy life is prodigious. You are increasing my blood pressure and I may have to disconnect. Before I take a break from your pretty naive analysis, let me remind you that the 🍊💩was never a moderate or even anything close to an actual conservative.
He has always been a liar, a pretty poor businessman, a guy who fails to meet his contractual obligations ( regularly failed to pay his suppliers or contractors) , mean spirited, misogynistic, racist, anti LGBTQI+, and someone whose main goal in life is to be the center of attention and perceived to be the smartest guy in the room. Most of the folks who I know voted for him would ostracize him if he lived in their small towns or neighborhoods.
Anyone who thought he was a moderate before the 2016 did not do any even cursory investigation into his history, business dealings or treatment of women, people of color , individuals with disabilities and the press. He has waffled on being antisemitic as he holds many of the stereotypes — both good and bad. He has always made outlandish claims about his deal making prowess and being the greatest X, Y or Z flavor of the day.
Maybe because I grew up on the east coast where is bull💩 is legendary, I fail to understand why anyone with the ability to read could have considered him a moderate or someone who would clear the swamp. He is and always has been for himself, all about himself and the top swamp member. The law has always been something to disregard if it gets in his way. He’s never made any deal that he won’t disregard to his advantage—at least as he perceives it.
I don't disagree with the substance of your reply, but I do with your opening editorial of Gabe. Nothing you said about Trump is untrue, but neither is Gabe's recounting of the events that unfolded. This article is about what could have been not what is. Trump was never thought of as a moderate, but perhaps a centrist given his dem associated past and outsider status.
I think you summed up Trump perfectly in your 2nd paragraph, but those qualities are quite commonly found in folks that aspire to the highest office in the land. Trump just manages to embody them all.
Brian. When you have the leader of the free world, lying constantly, threatening our allies, admiring strong men like Orban, Putin and Erdogan, calling on ethnic cleansing in terms of rebuilding Gaza, appoints a billionaire to clean up our government waste when the billionaire himself is the recipient
of multiple government contracts, with nazi overtones to his speech, selects the singularly most unqualified persons for cabinet positions and Gabe chooses to write about his centrist views…….i am sorry, he lost me on this one. Actually, I will give you this. Character matters whether you are progressive, centrist or right …Trump has 0 character and the label of centrist does not matter even if true.
I know that it was meant as an alternative But even that is a fantasy considering what anyone who took any time to check on his history. Gabe is implying that this alternative is a could have been. Given who 🍊💩 is this alternative was never possible. I have a real problem with Gabe insinuating that 🍊💩could have even come anywhere in the same universe as the alternative Gabe portrayed.
Now I agree that it takes a certain amount chutzpah to run for office and face the hell of a campaign. But I will not agree that most politicians share his hate and vileness in any degree. But then I have found quite a number who suffer from cement between the ears.
Another strong motivation for him is to avoid further prosecution. He has not been pardoned. The case against him has been dropped and evidence carefully preserved ( I hope). State charges can also be brought against him. He knows that once he is no longer president he could spend the rest of his life in court or behind bars.
You nailed it, and Gabe needs to get honest about Trump. I was told Gabe was fair and just “ stated the facts”. That is no longer or maybe never has been the case. You are an apologist for Trump and the vile cowards that cower to his every move. Do yourself a favor and read the exemplary article about Musks dangerous and unconstitutional power grabs by Michael Brock. Perhaps you think the crook Netanyahu is moderate as well. He is a crook just like Trump and maybe they can settle in Gaza together. What a moron we have leading our country and Netanyahu is equally as narcissistic and nasty and out of touch with reality
I have been teetering on the brink of paranoia regarding extreme evil intentions of those in power. However, I've recently calmed my thoughts by not assuming vile outcomes. I think I've actually substituted positive assumptions along the lines of Gabe's analysis today. I'm not supporting inhumanitarian, lawless efforts; or misinformation, lies and subversive media control. But I am staying open to the best human potential beginning to surface in us humans.
Very nice writing. I wish I had a better judgement of exactly how much sway/control Trump has over Musk, or perhaps much how sway/control Musk may have over Trump.
This is an interesting analysis from the politically-average perspective that describes how things political have worked over the long run in the US. However, in its current application it neglects the potential political effects of the various "reveals" of the past political and administrative operations that Trump and Company might be able to lay bare to the view of the public and the two major political parties. It might be a case of showing the facts first, then asking for and encouraging legislation second.
An interesting idea, but I doubt that Trump is likely to either ask for or encourage legislation. The Democrats might come to him and dangle a bauble, as they did in his first administration, but he won't go looking for it.
I used to be astonished at the level of vitriol against W. It was a joke in our family that whenever anything went wrong, we would say, "it’s Bush’s fault." I never dreamt that that level of abuse could be topped. The hatred expressed here almost on a daily basis is scarier to me than the inchoate threats to DEMOCRACY posed by this administration. Carter was a saintly man but he was a deeply flawed president. Basing leadership approval solely on a personal definition of character or an assessment of empathy is a pretty shaky measure. Policy matters.
I disagree. Policies can change quickly. Character, generally, does not.
Yes, I do hate that the person who is supposed to be leading the country (for all of us, not just the people who voted for him), lies constantly, has been adjudicated of sexual assault, is seeking revenge, and is dismantling democracy.
When Trump was in office the first time I actually thought he had the chance to become a good president. I believe he never really grasped what it was that the American electorate handed him. His true nature certainly came to the fore and it’s been downhill ever since. Now we’re dealing with the same crap as before with the exception that his minions are even worse this time around. We need to keep our cool and work together to right the ship. Maybe even get some real work done. The grievance sh*t has got to stop.
What's the incentive for bi-partisanship when we're under minority rule; I can't fathom asking Democrats to collaborate with a government only formed through manipulating voting rights, voting districts, and the electoral college. Why would the populous majority treat this Republican trifecta as something to coordinate with?
Look up the truth about the monies. Currently, we give less percentage wise than many of the other industrialized countries and republicans lie as easily as taking a drink of water. Trump lies over and over. Look up the facts
This is flattering to Trump and would be something he would entertain if it came across his desk, but it won't, because Trump is not in control. The agenda is Project 2025, and maybe Project Russia. It is TESCREAL and the end of democracy. Trump is just an avatar for extremists.

Exactly. We are FAR past business as usual.

I guess we'll see what happens outside of everyone's guesses.

Fleisher for President! But Gabe must wait 12 years to be of eligible age.

Yes, that’s what the country dreams it’s about. Maybe this time the dream will be true, said Charlie Brown.
Looking like the USAID stories won't be going away anytime soon no matter how hard the Dems try to ignore them. Starting to get some real traction.
Look up the truth about the monies. Currently, we give less percentage wise than many of the other industrialized countries and republicans lie as easily as taking a drink of water. Trump lies over and over. Look up the facts
