Comments from administration officials characterizing both citizens who were recently slain in Minneapolis by ICE officers have been widely reported. What I haven’t seen is any notable reaction to the rush to judgement that comprise these statements. Within minutes of Ms. Good’s shooting President Trump labeled her a “professional agitator” with no time to have established the truth of that statement. It is this inflammatory rhetoric that illustrates that this administration is committed to neither truth, justice, nor The American Way.

Agreed, it’s more than simple falsehoods or political spin, it’s blatant lies and character smears that are absolutely abhorrent, particularly with the 5 year old who was detained. These officials show no remorse or empathy, frequently showing glee at the suffering of others.

Linking to articles about comments made and simply giving a footnote that these claims have been disproven do not get at how deplorable these officials are. We can’t be constantly moving the goalposts with the Trump administration and ignoring how despicable this rhetoric is.

I also want to add my frustration that your September piece about Charlie Kirk seemed to have more opinions and making him a martyr, while you have not treated innocent bystanders such as Good, Pretti, or any of the innocent people murdered by ICE this year with that grace and reverence.

Nuanced or objective takes do not need to be devoid of humanity.

As always Gabe incredible details..."Minnesota officials noted that “in the first 11 months of 2025, from January 1 to November 30, there were no officer-involved shootings in Minneapolis where the Minneapolis Police Department was involved.” CHILLING

A correction:

Video analysis by reputable sources show she never touched him. Period. Bellingcat has the details.

Rosemary Ford's avatar

Bellingcat is a investigative journalist group which does digital forensics. There are other high quality groups. George Soros is a disclosed donor to Bellingcat's "training initiatives". Their U.S. entity reported a massive jump in revenue from $458,000 in 2023 to $6.7 million in 2024. I am happy to know about this source of information but the rapid increase in their funding makes me question their impartiality. I am sure the footage will be analyzed by multiple sources. I think I have already said here that I don't think using automobiles to block access is peaceful if the driver remains in the car.

Gabe, I see that a number of these comments are accusing you of maintaining your usual measured approach at a time when outrage appears more appropriate. I beg to differ with them because finally, even your measured approach cannot conceal the truth: the Administration lies to the American people. Stay measured until it becomes unmistakably obvious that these killings are murders as well as attempts to intimidate us from protesting Trump's evil regime. "What's the end game?" asks another measured (Republican) voice. It's fascism, and I hope the people who answered "unsure" will realize that before it's too late.

The facts do speak for themselves. The last paragraph is an absolute indictment of Trump's tone deaf leadership:

"On Saturday night, hours after Pretti was killed, Trump hosted a black-tie screening at the White House for a documentary about his wife, socializing with the queen of Jordan, the CEO of Apple, and other guests. The next morning, he posted a 448-word missive on social media about his forthcoming White House ballroom."

It is catching up with him. And oh, by the way, absolutely boycott that documentary.

Michelle, yes, a measured journalistic approach is great and I admire (and at the same time I’m impatient) with Gabe’s reporting. However it is time to be more outraged than measured.

Alex Pretti was LEGALLY carrying a gun. He was not breaking any Minnesota law. Republicans for years have mindlessly supported the gun lobby, and kept such firearms legal. Now, suddenly, they think carrying a gun is a bad idea? Hey, conservatives, this is your doing.

Of course the agents might have shot him anyway, just because they could.

Scott Thomas Photography's avatar

Your last paragraph about Trump hosting a viewing of his wife's bio and then posting a long post about the ballroom reminded me of the bogus claim of Nero playing a fiddle (note, it could only been a lyre) while Rome burned. It really does show he does not care, has no clue or feels he is untouchable.

I’m disturbed by what I’ve seen from today’s video from Minnesota,” said Rep. Michael Baumgartner (R-WA).

Disturbed?????? I can sure think of a better word to use than ‘disturbed’!!!!! This is much more than a disturbance!!!!

"It is possible that the agent perceived a threat after hearing the word “gun,” but if that was all that precipitated the shooting, it would seem to speak to either a training failure, a feeling of impunity on the part of Trump-era immigration agents, or both. Presumably, the agent should have been able to see that the hands of the person he was shooting were both empty, his weapon already removed. The person was restrained and on the ground, defenseless. And yet the agent chose to shoot him — not just once, but 10 times, and fatally."

I am disappointed that you have chosen to make and publish a judgment like this. These events happen in nano seconds and, I suspect, you have ever been even close to a situation like this. As a country, we seem to have deviated from the concept of peaceful protest. I don't know what led up to the woman being pepper sprayed and pushed but "presumably" she was in an agent's face. A peaceful protester would have aided the lady and then recorded from a distance. Maybe all protesters should follow the Covid 6' rule.

This case reminded me of the case of Philandro Castile--another tragedy. I know that gun owners object to the perception that carrying a concealed weapon implies an intent to do harm but one who is carrying has to be aware of that perception when they find themselves in a fraught situation. This is not to "blame the victim" but to note that common sense seems to have flown the proverbial coop in Minnesota.

I can understand some points you're making but he was shot 10 times. 10 sounds more like an execution than a justified concern for officers safety.

Rosemary Ford's avatar

According to Gemini A1 Firing ten shots from an automatic weapon generally takes between 0.5 and 1.5 seconds, depending on the specific model.

In many states people (lots of people) carry guns everyday - even grandmas, and the police manage to handle various situations without causing this deadly confrontation. A lot of people that carry guns legally realize the huge responsibly that is upon them when they carry and don't 'go for a gun' because some one makes them mad. Police officers are given a lot of training in dealing with citizens that carry guns and are very effective in deescalation. And peaceful protestors are allowed to film and even talk *hit. I think watching the video that these ICE agents got angry at the protestors and THEY escalate the situation to intimidate, working themselves up to commit a crime (also known as bullying with deadly consequences). These ICE agents aren't well trained or even versed in law it appears and if they don't have the control to STOP shooting after they escalate then they should never be in that position.

Rosemary Ford's avatar

The Supreme Court has not definitely held that there is a constitutional right to photograph police officers performing their duties. When an appropriate case arises, the court probably will hold that there is a right. But, I will be surprised if the right is unconditional. I think the Covid 6' rule strikes a proper balance. Also, at some point, talkig sh*t, ear splitting whistles, drums, using automobiles, doxing, might also be reassessed under free speech/expression guidelines.

Karen B's avatar

Police officers are on body cameras everyday, police officers can be filmed, police officers will tell you their name and badge number, television series used to follow and film police officers, they are YouTube channels. These aren't maybes, these rules that have been around a long time. There are legal rules that police officers must follow and it's good for the police for credibility and the community knowing they will be treated fairly.

Irrelevant comment. No full automatic setting weapon was used

Rosemary Ford's avatar

I stand corrected. Again, according to AI, the officer was probably using a Service weapon) (typically a semi-automatic handgun like a Glock 17 or SIG Sauer P320) depends heavily on the shooter's intent: whether they are aiming for precision or simply "dumping" the magazine as fast as possible.1. Rapid Fire (The "Mag Dump")For a trained individual focusing purely on speed, ten rounds can be fired in approximately 1.5 to 2.5 seconds. The Math: A professional shooter can achieve "splits" (the time between shots) of roughly 0.15 to 0.20 seconds. The Result: At $0.20$ seconds per interval, 9 intervals (to get to 10 shots) equals $1.8$ seconds.

According to one video narrative (which I couldn't watch) the ten shots took 6 seconds but the narrator said that it was unclear whether more than one agent was shooting.

I have never owned or shot any gun.

Ms. Good and Mr. Pretti should be alive but there is a difference between causing death and murder.

AJ Ong's avatar

It's obvious you never shot a gun. Your ai info on how quickly 10 shots can be fired is faulty. Probably should stop posting until you can clear up your thinking slop

Bob's avatar

Listen to yourself. You are giving masked federal agents the benefit of the doubt because they have “nanoseconds” to react, and placing the responsibility for deescalation solely on concerned civilians rather than the authorities who are supposedly there to protect those very people.

Common sense has indeed flown the proverbial coop in Minnesota, and it has allowed us to see the sheep such as yourself who lap up the governments propaganda and eagerly watch your countrymen stripped of their constitutional rights. Absolutely sickening.

Nana Booboo's avatar

Why are you lying about Alex Pretti's and Philando Castile's murders?

All the videos show Alex Pretti was buried under a pile of ICE and CBP agents. He never had a chance to touch his gun before the agent in the gray jacket took it from his holster. There was no danger to the agents that required the "split-second decision" to be trotted out for his summary execution. He was disarmed and had all four hands on the ground when ten bullets were pumped into his body. He was probably dead after the first one hit him.

As for the right-wing tripe you spewed about Philando Castile: he too was a CCW holder, just like Alex Pretti. But of course he was also Black and may have smoked pot recently, so those two things make you think he deserved to die.

Mr. Castile's death was a tragedy. The officer was was charged with manslaughter and acquitted of criminal charges. "As The Two-Way reported, newly released dashcam video shows it took just seconds for the encounter to escalate after Yanez asked Castile for his driver's license and insurance:

"Castile hands over the cards and says, 'Sir, I do have to tell you I do have a firearm on me.' Yanez says, 'Ok. Don't reach for it then.'

" 'I'm not pulling it out,' Castile responds.

"Yanez's voice rises suddenly and he yells, 'Don't pull it out. Don't pull it out.'

"Yanez fires seven shots into the vehicle. Five hit Castile."

The wrongful death settlement in Castile's case shows what most of us who weren't the led-by-the-hand jury members in the criminal trial already knew: he was murdered
