Great column today, Gabe! Meaningful civics lessons...I wish everyone could absorb them...because the President's office is really about the 'tone' of leadership...and you nailed that one today too!
While drinking my morning coffee, I read President Washington's "Farewell Address." I found this one paragraph very insightful.
"It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions." President Washington warned us of the danger of "factions," a shame the American public has forgotten this fundamental concept. Just the humble opinion of an old hermit. (Thank-you very much for your insightful writings.)
Thank you so much for the link to Gloria Bilchick’s substack. What a fantastic summary of the arduous, necessary, meticulous, and enlivening task of election volunteering. This kind of activism is what makes me feel love and pride for America.
On immigration: most important line "especially if Congress refuses to act …” which they have chosen not to do since 1968 (when they saw the 1965 reform results); 1986 (when the Dems betrayed the I-9); 1995 (when Barbara Jordan presented her report) …. Interesting to posit which would cause more harm—mucking up the Justice Dept. or the Supreme Court; anger or fecklessness … Those good people working at the polls (and everywhere else) deserve better choices.
Thanks for being our election guide, Gabe ❤️

As people go to vote tomorrow, my view remains, we get the government we deserve, for we have voted it in.
