“I would gladly pay $100 for eggs if it means I never have to see another third world immigrant in my country ever again,” Logan Hall, a staffer at The Blaze, a conservative news outlet, said in another post.
How does someone actually think like that and live with themselves? What an awful and horrible thing to say by, I can only assume, an awful and horrible person.
Gabe, I’m worried about your shift in reporting. I fully understand self-preservation - fully. Yet, you are starting to write like the Washington Post and NY Times. trump did not win a trade war. He flat out bullied and threatened a smaller country into doing what he wanted. That’s the headline - bullied and threatened. Not winning.
Columbia had the backbone to stand up for how the incoming immigrants were treated and from the reporting I’ve seen so far it looks like they succeeded in getting better conditions for them. Also, shame on our military for treating the immigrants that way. That is despicable but it’s good to know that the military is already onboard with doing trump’s bidding in treating other people as less than human beings. How long before he turns them on citizens?
I’ve read your work since you were in junior high. Please examine how the times we are in might be affecting your work. Again, though - I fully understand self-preservation since you do belong to a couple of groups the fascists will target. Perhaps there is a middle ground in reporting the truth without whitewashing it? I honestly don’t know as I’m not a journalist read on a national level. Be careful but please, if possible, call it what it is. Wishing you my best.
I disagree. Gabe has always (most often?) avoided loaded language like "bullying" in his reporting. Sometimes I have wished he would be more partisan (toward bleeding-heart liberals like me), but then I realize that by avoiding that loaded imagery he is increasing the number of readers who trust his unbiased reporting.
I, too, have been reading Gabe since he was 14, and I am amazed and gratified with how he has grown and progressed.
Serious question Kasumii. Do you think Trump did not win here at least on a micro level? Do you think casual voters, which make up the majority of the population, don't think Trump won here and feel that their vote for him is being justified?
Trump didn't win anything. He simply showed that he had no clue. It all got sorted out in the end. But Colombia is now seeking trade with China. Perhaps that was always going to happen but wasn't the best move to push them into it.
You misunderstood my response. Wasn't asking if you supported Trump's Columbia action but if the American population, particularly the voters that formerly voted for Obama & Biden and then Trump in 2024, would consider him a winner in the dispute
Even from an anti-Trump perspective, it is v clear that Trump won here with Columbia backing down in less than 24 hours and the people who voted for him are feeling quite justified. It wasn't only a clear victory, it set the tone for Mexico and other Latin countries who will now quickly fall in line
I wouldn’t cancel your subscription - not that you said you would - nor be angry just yet.
When I put myself in Gabe’s situation I can see that it might take a while to get my bearings in reporting in what is now a chaotic at best and potentially volatile environment for journalists. Let’s give him time to see if this way of reporting continues or if he is able to call things what they are while also staying safe. Gabe is, as Kathy Combs writes, an interesting, in depth journalist. I agree with her assessment of his work and I hope it continues.
Gabe, you have a talent for engaging readers - you are very smart, interesting and as we all have seen - you do your homework. Often I have felt like I am sitting down at the kitchen table from having a conversation with you. And I have learned a lot. It's wonderful. I look forward to more of the same.
I agree that some key details were left out and while the administration claimed victory that is not exactly what happened. It seems Biden was already sending planes prior to this administration taking over and there were rules concerning treatment in place and aircraft used that this administration violated. As soon as this administration straightened up and followed the predetermined rules everything de-escalated. I am sad most of that was glossed over in this piece. It asserts the way Trump does business is bad, which it does, but it left out important details and the fact that this really wasn’t a win for either side, it was just back to business as usual that was already in play.
It will be interesting when he tries to do the same thing to both Canada and Mexico. The field is alot more even with these countries. The president of Mexico is as crazy as him. In Canada, the Premiere of Ontario is also as crazy as him. Its going to be bloody. US buys billions of dollars worth of stuff that is used to make stuff and sells billions of dollars of stuff to Canada. US for sure can hold out longer in a protracted fight, but 200 years of friendship and good trade will be destroyed. Canada supplies 30% of Floridas foreign tourist industry. Hard to replace 3 million visitors per year
Trump did not ‘win’ … his tactics are draconian, and show weakness. Colombia, which the Trump team misspelled, had leverage of their own and they used it. Aldo it’s not common for immigrants being repatriated to be handcuffed; Colombia will accept the flights on the condition there will be no handcuffs, and bathrooms will be available. Not a win, draconian fail.
I do think it’s notable that both sides bent to get this done and I was surprised you didn’t mention the US’s specific concessions in this agreement, given that in general, you’re the best at showing the give and take. There’s been so much to cover though lately that I bet you’re exhausted! Thanks for keeping on reporting to/for us and doing the hard work of sifting through and serving up important information, I’m glad it’s your job and not mine. You do it well.
I would be curious to know exactly who was on board the military flights. Supposedly the United States is only rounding up criminals for deportation (those who have committed a crime other than entering or remaining in the United States illegally). But I can find no news source which delves into this question. If the only crime these illegal immigrants committed was being in the US illegally, then it seems like the handcuffs were uncalled for and sickening. Not a good picture. But if these are actual criminals who would otherwise be handcuffed during transport within the United States, that is a different matter. And we should also consider the safety of everyone being deported. What if we have otherwise innocent people deported sharing a flight with violent criminals? While the handcuffs may seem over-the-top, they might be providing a limited amount of protection for the group as a whole, and for those guarding them, and for the authorities receiving them on the other end. The lack of information in the media is probably just another symptom of the fact that there really is no media anymore--they all copy and paste the same information. I checked American, Australian, and British sources and none of them seemed to understand the nature of the status of those being deported. As for Trump, he is best ignored whenever possible. If you remove his bluster and nonsense and focus on the reason why Colombia refused to receive these particular returnees in the first place, and what has changed which made them agree to receive them subsequently, there is likely much more to this story than caving in over threatened tariffs and visa restrictions. There is so much more to learn about this story.
The people on board this flight had all been arrested and detained by the Biden administration. There have been regular and frequent deportation flights to Colombia with detainees but on commercial, not military planes. Trump sent a military plane with no prior authorization. Colombia was quite correct in not allowing it to land. Heather Cox Richardson - also on Substack - has a comprehensive account of the incident and the history surrounding it. Worth a read.
That is a huge question isn’t it? The hard core MAGA are haters and he “hates” who they hate. But there are the non hard core who believed him when he promised to bring down prices. But then he’s already stepped away from that “promise”. Go figure.
Well, if nothing more, the comments compelled me to go back and read Heather Cox Richardson, even though I often find her supercilious. Unhappy deportees should not be on commercial flights and it strains my imagination to understand how they could be transported without at least handcuffs on any flight. How any country that is in such political or economic disarray that huge percentages of its population claim they are fleeing for their lives can be trusted to process or vet migrants.
Gabe, I appreciate the lack of sensationalism in your reporting. I'm new to your Substack and already appreciate the tone of the information you provide.
In this particular situation with Colombia, I would love to see the American media answer the question about what concessions the US made in order to end this standoff? This is an important point if one is making the argument that Trump is successfully bullying his way around the globe. If Colombia simply caved, fine. But it would be be good to know either way.

Fortunately the bulk of the US wouldn't think this way
Katie Miller is probably making a good bit of money Her husband is a hard core idiot and she married him
Read some of the stories of old time money Most of those people tended to be fairly frugal

Bullying is not diplomacy, and we really shouldn’t be bullying our allies, or we’re going to find ourselves abandoned in our hour of need.

I agree. This reporting made me angry. Trump is a bully with no actual understanding of the economics of trade and alliances.

Sickening. Embarrassed to be an American. I think immigrants are what make the fabric of our nation.

Looks like most of those who comment on your site were Biden/ Harris voters. Hard to image thinking that way. Please don't pander to them.

Smartest comment I've read so far...
Its easy to force a small country, especially when there is very little trading business on your part
I just wander what actually went on behind the scenes Did Guatemala totally capitulate or is this the bloviating Trump
Guatamala may have taken the prisoners but they complained about the pictures
It will be interesting to see in a couple weeks when papparazzi take pictures of the flights if they will still be in handcuffs
“ which elected him largely with inflation in mind — would be quite as willing to forgive increasing prices.”
Should say : which, IF they elected him largely with inflation in mind….
That’s a big if. People don’t always tell the truth when they respond to pollsters.
That is a huge question isn’t it? The hard core MAGA are haters and he “hates” who they hate. But there are the non hard core who believed him when he promised to bring down prices. But then he’s already stepped away from that “promise”. Go figure.
I forgot. That will be the end of sending low cost prescription dugs to USA

Gabe, for the first time you have disappointed me. Read Heather Cox Richardson's take on this kerfuffle. Trump winning his first trade war indeed.
