Lutnick just told Americans that the outcome of these tariff negotioations will be.......... Dad, son and grandson will be working in the same factories making all the cheap stuff for generations.... Meanwhile the EU is focused on advancing Education for their people... Follow a Fool and you will be a Fool.
People’s egos will not allow them to admit they were wrong even when presented with countering facts, but even that doesn’t matter because MAGA is still being misinformed by the same lying sources and they still lack the critical thinking skills to process truth. So, looking for the regretful Trump supporters is a futile exercise.
Came here to say the same thing. It even holds for the voters who chose to sit the election out and not vote for either candidate. They are still claiming Harris was a terrible candidate or that she supported genocide, neither of which are true. Even though Trump has been a disaster people simply hate admitting they were wrong.
The most important thing to remember about current polling and focus groups is that the vast majority of Americans have not yet experienced sticker shock. We may anticipate it, but we haven't bought a car with the tariffs included, haven't seen major increases in the price of groceries, and haven't gone shopping for school supplies and winter clothes for the kids, still less for toys for Christmas. Over the next four to eight months, we will see whether it's still "...the economy, stupid," and whether Trump becomes toxic to Republicans and make-nice-to-him Democrats.
This is going to be interesting to watch the surveys over time. Some how, per Trump, the stock gains post election were because of him and the drops during his presidency were because of Biden. (Just an example).
The Biden excuse has to become less believable to the MAGA crowd at some point as time marches on.
But that's because the choice was between Harris and Trump. A not insignificant number of voters would never for a woman, and in addition some voters would not for a woman of color. If the Democrats want to win, sorry to say it, they have to run a white man, preferably a strong governor, like Bashear. I also like Pritzker and Shapiro, but again, they are Jewish and there are antisemites who may find a "good" reason not to vote for them. I hate what I'm saying, but that doesn't make it not true.
Good point on the choice given. Wonder how AOC or Pete Buttigieg would have altered the results? Annecdata, as well as, survey data must not be the main focus for crafting a meaningful American vision and political platform for change.
AOC is young and exciting, but again, I doubt a majority of voters are going to vote for President a junior congresswoman of Puerto Rican descent. I really like her but people like me are not the average or majority of voters. I think she's got an amazing career ahead of her.
Buttigieg is smart and I like his politics, but apart from being gay, he has never held elected office except for Mayor of South Bend IN. I, for one, think the President should be a seasoned and experienced leader and legislator. Its not a popularity contest. That's how we got Trump.
I agree with your observation that the Presidency should not be merely a popularity contest. I do think, however, that both AOC and Buttigieg go deep into substance and therefore enhance and transcend their popularity. Seasoned experienced leaders and legislators? Perhaps by those metrics they are not at the top, but look at the recent history of results with those metics...Also, competent cabinet choices, etc, count for a lot in our complex world. Charisma, vision, intelligence and popularity might be the way to go!
The climate crisis is rarely talked about in discussions of our political future, so I like to drop in a mention of it from time to time.
Nature hasn't put anything on hold while we deal with the Trump insanity. For example, a recent study showed that on average, land is retaining less moisture due to planetary heating. That means less water in fields, rivers, and aquifers, which in turn can reduce food production.
Right now, India is using a terrorist attack in Kashmir to justify breaking a treaty with Pakistan that regulates the division of water in the Indus River. Cutting off water to Pakistan would be devastating to farmers. This could lead to war, and both nations are nuclear-armed.
Meanwhile, Trump and the Republicans are denying that there is a climate crisis and are actively working to make it worse by promoting fossil fuel production and undermining efforts to switch to renewables. Bad as the tariff situation is, I'd rather worry about it than about breathing radioactive particles from a water war.
Elections are not about idle preferences, but about those engaged and motivated enough to actually show up to vote. Notice the 15% in Emerson poll that did not vote, which IMHO made the difference in2024. I sense a big shift in people paying attention this time.
Yesterday's cabinet meeting, no doubt set up by Susie Wiles to bolster Bone Spur Boy's frail ego as the GDP drops was a sight to behold. All these flunkies sitting around the table bolstering the buffoon with platitudes of lies. Wiles knows they are in trouble, but she foolishly signed on to this ultimate loser and now her bed is made. Right Wing commentators not echoing his BS about this being Biden's economy is a really bad sign of things to come. MAGA supporters sticking with Trump is not surprising. As Brendan says, the real pain has not been felt as yet, but it is on its way. Apparently, China never did call but there are rumors the WH did. Blinky the Bone Spur Boy shows his true colors. Maybe he can blame Biden for making the call. This will be fun to watch!
So in ESSENCE, the GOAL AND outcome of this TRUMP ADMINISTRATION IS TO TURN AMERICANS.... INTO THE FUTURE CHINESE peasants .............................HOW WONDERFUL!!!!! LOL
I definitely appreciate your looking at the overall numbers and not just the anecdotes. One question, however: what does it even mean to regret voting for someone who lost the election? It seems to me that the (small) percentage of voters who regret voting for Trump do so because they don't like his policies, whereas the voters who report regretting voting for Harris do so because they would have rather just not bothered going to the polls knowing what they know now (that she lost).
"it’s important not to take those anecdotes as data ...." Exactly, for example, "But the same survey also found that 3% of Harris voters regret their vote..." I find this puzzling. How can you regret a vote, that if you could go back and revote it wouldn't changed the actual outcome at all?
Thanks Gabe. Same kind of “analysis” by the MSM holds true for their handling of anything health-related. Basic statistics is beyond their ken (and inconsistent with the now-standard clickbait business model).
As long as he’s punishing the people they want him to punish, they will follow him. They want him to humiliate the people they feel have humiliated them.

They probably don't look at the stock market. When their SS checks are late, then you'll hear them howling.

It hasn't hit home yet

Thank you for this! Some important reminders here.
Re trump voters lack of regret: it is really hard for humans to admit they are wrong.
