Hoping to see a similar article regarding Mr. Trump’s age and what he stated in the debate. THE MSM seems to be giving him a pass. YOu have always been fair in your assessments. (I don’t read your page everyday so I may have missed that you addressed this.)
Agree, with all 3 of your statements. Truth hurts, but Gabe has always managed to be factual and non-partisan. (I read probably 95% of his newsletters over the years.)
Trump spewed a lot of bullshit during the debate. Joe Biden certainly spewed his share of it too. Lying the Gold Star families out of existence to prop up your 4 year record was by far the most disgraceful moment of the night.
The most perceptive and thorough analysis of this fraught situation that I have read. But there is one crucial matter that has been overlooked. As someone who has struggled with stuttering, I believe that Biden was in the throes of a devastating episode of stuttering. This could not only account for his many verbal lapses, but also a state of anxiety bordering on panic I don’t think this bears on the public perception of his frailty; but I think it is important to realize.
I appreciate them empathy for any stutter but that ain’t why he blew it. As far as the lies Trump was spewing- any person with any amount of energy would have hit back plenty hard on all of them- especially against the lie of “ Afghanistan withdrawal was the most embarrassing day in American history.” The easiest comeback perhaps in American history for that one is simple: Jan 6.
From my perceptions of President Biden since December, I do not think he did that bad at all to be honest. I think those in December who thought President Biden was amazingly sharp and quick and so he should not be challenged in the Democratic primaries finally got their reality check at that debate. But besides talking way too fast to get too much information in, and besides both of them using this very early debate to just Grumpy Old Men each other on stage for the world, I'm not seeing the "disaster" that others are talking about. Yeah former President Trump was better at the insult-debate-show. We all knew that since 2016, I'm not sure why so many people did not realize they were going to a cow patty field and a debate was to break out.
While perhaps he didn't "win" the debate, but I think President Biden did okay, and maybe he should think about using a wheelchair. There is no shame in using a wheelchair because you need it. He is president because of his policies not because of his able walking. And apparently so many people loved him so much that they wanted no one else to run in the Democratic primary to challenge him despite a few takers chomping at the bit, so I think there should be more love and less hate on him from a single presidential debate that took place before either of the conventions.
What this story is really about is the public's, and thus the media's, incessant need for melodrama. It's remarkable how many of Biden's "friends" immediately jumped on this story and came to a conclusion, without even thinking about it over night. If they had bothered to think about it, they might have come to this...
Please list the decisions Biden has made while in office that show evidence of mental infirmity.
I've yet to read or hear a single commentary which has bothered to ask this question.
The media is jerking off in public again in order to build audience and ad revenues. Same old story. Nothing to see here folks.
They keep saying “one night is not going to override 3 1/2 years of success”. His supporters are not saying anything negative about his past. The concerns are about the future. Father Time is undefeated.
Unfortunately (inexplicably?) the race was so close before, I cannot think of any change that would help.
I was going to vote for Biden. Never Trump. Ever. Now? I think he’s not taking the “good” of our Country into account assuring another Trump horror show. Shame on Joe, his wife, family and staff all of whom are enabling the destruction of USA. I’ll write in Governor Wes Moore
Excellent writing Gabe. Keep giving the youth perspective. It’s important for us, the late edge of the Boomers to hear. Because you get news differently, we often don’t hear the same voices or POVs. Thanks.
Gee Gabe, do you have any words for Biden that are not disparaging (in denial, stubborn, full of excuses). What about what reasonable people do like waiting for the dust to settle before making any decisions, being persistent and not giving up because of 1 not so great debate? Y
I really enjoyed this post, and those 10 points about Biden's personality help frame the next few weeks. For me personally, it's been jarring to realize certain things about his character that I guess I hadn't picked up on before. Wonder if others have had a similar experience.

Age isn't the issue. It's cognitive ability.

Gabe, great column! You are doing a great job! This was the most factual and insightful column I have read post the debate. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for this insight. I have a nephew who stutters, but mostly only under stress, such as at his recent Eagle project presentation.
Regardless, attempting a true debate with an opponent who spews a firehouse of lies relentlessly is an exercise in frustration.

Great article, Gabe!!

I am a Biden Believer.
An excellent piece. I’ve written a piece titled It’s Time, Mr. President please take a look at Substack.com/@markmansour

When the going gets tough, the tough get going and in the south buckle up buttercup!

Arguments to get out: He isn't up to the job.
Arguments to stay: pride, hubris, obstinance.
We now know what his choice was. Silly me, thinking of the country.
Biden’s team wants a scripted moment that feels unscripted. Clinton did it but he was a master of retail campaigning.

The president needs to be fully on every moment of all four years.
This was at his best, on debate night and he couldn't pull it together.
C'mon, you don't come here for platitudes and pep talks.
Phenomenal recap
