Your analysis on why Dems should vote for the CR was excellent! It changed my viewpoint. Every lawmaker should read it. I am praying we don't have a shutdown. Schumer spoke the truth--perhaps he read your column?

Oh please. Schumer didn’t “fold” .he relented and realized when you are dealing with freaky, pathetic, pathological liars, and close the government down you risk even more danger than dealing with a terrible budget. Can you imagine the harm and lies that Trump and that filthy vicious Musk would do if the government shut down. I honestly think Trump is capable of very evil misdeeds…….he is screwing himself with his policies and his absurd threats. The stock market is tanking and MANUFACTURING IS NOT COMING BACK HERE IN ANY FORESEEABLE FUTURE. Europe instead of turning to the right is in the center because of this rogue inept president.

We have to deal with the facts Only Massie and Paul have the courage, among all REPUBLICANS to vote their conscience

This was a lose lose for Democrats I believe on standing on principle but sometimes it is not the best thing

It's not a card game. It's democracy. What vote better protects democracy? If voting for it delegates additional power to the President and legitimizes his destruction of democracy, then I'm opposed. Make the President and the Republicans solely responsible for the assault on democracy. Fear of what Musk/Trump will do in a shutdown doesn't look different from what they will do without a shutdown. Why help them?

"In a joint statement, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reminded the president of the “widespread chaos” that had “hurt millions of Americans” during the 34-day border wall shutdown from December 22, 2018, to January 24, 2019. “The same thing will repeat itself if he tries this again. We hope he learned his lesson,” wrote Pelosi and Schumer. By law, Congress had until October 1, 2019, to approve the 2020 budget."

Did Trump learn a lesson? Nope. Doesn't care. My question to Pelosi and Schumer is - did you learn yours?

List of All Government Shutdowns and Their Duration

This list of government shutdowns in U.S. history was drawn from Congressional Research Service reports:

2018 (President Donald Trump): January 20 to January 23 - 3 days

2018 (President Donald Trump): February 9 – 1 day.

I think Schumer changing his vote to yes is strategic: he knows the bill won’t pass but it won’t be a “Schumer Shutdown”. Nor Pelosi. Who else can Trump use that has a ring to it?

Chuck rolls over and goes paws up. This is unacceptable. If he won't step aside, he needs to be pushed (metaphorically). #LeadershipNOW

The framers of the constitution could never have foreseen this level of perfidy. We are in un charted waters. It’s probably for the best that there is no government shutdown. But the bill would have passed without the support of Schumer or Fetterman. They just lacked the nerve to allow the Republicans to own this mess. We need somebody with the political acumen of Pelosi or, God help me, McConnell, as minority leader instead of Schumer. Where can we find her (or him)?

Thanks. William …I did read Chris and subscribed. I think Trump called him one of the dumbest journalists ever.

I get a kick how democrats ( the public) LIKE FOLKS HERE turn on their own immediately when they disagree. No wonder republicans win. As Trump said, “ I could kill someone on 5th ave and they would still vote for him”

Did you see TPM's Josh Marshall dissing you on Bluesky Wednesday and Thursday? He did a series of posts attacking you and your Substack piece. But not by name, because he didn’t want to drive any site traffic to your piece so people could read it for themselves. His argument is that his unnamed "expert" knows more than all of the people who were willing to be quoted with full attribution.
