Happy Sunday! As the title of this newsletter suggests, I’m writing this just before I’m about to take off for Chicago, where I’ll be covering the Democratic National Convention this week.
It’s my first time covering a convention,1 and I’m excited to bring you all an inside view of the arena. There are a lot of threads I’m interested in following — but email me or comment below if you have specific stories you’d be interested in seeing from Chicago or questions about a political convention you’d like answered.
Substack is experimenting with live video, and Wake Up To Politics will be one of the first outlets to have access to it — so I’m hoping to go live at least a few times in the next week just to show you guys what it looks like at the United Center and perhaps to give in-the-moment reactions to big speeches. Would you tune into a live video right after, say, Harris or Walz’s acceptance speech? Let me know.
I’m planning to do coverage from all sorts of angles and platforms, so I hope you’ll come along for the ride.
Before we dive into R&R, I do want to give a quick thanks to all my subscribers — you’re the only reason a 22-year-old independent journalist has been credentialed to cover this historic moment. In particular, thank you to all the paid subscribers — it’s your financial support that makes trips like this possible.
When you become a paid subscriber, you can help make sure I can continue doing on-the-ground coverage like the trip to Chicago — and you also get access to R&R, a private email offering a recap of the previous week and recommendations of my favorite pieces of journalism.
I hope you’ll consider signing up! Now, onto the news:
