Will there be any reliable economic statistics left after they finish removing the economists from the agencies and install their own puppets who will put out whatever numbers Trump want to read? How will we "know" how the country is really doing?

Why aren’t more congressional folks, reporters, etc., calling out Trump on the spot - like Macron did! Trump is a blatant liar and a laughingstock, yet faces very little pushback from anyone, ever, other than independent reporting such as WUTP, MeidasTouch, Aaron Parnas, and Jim Acosta to name a few. The compliant behavior comes off as making what’s being said by Trump viable - when it isn’t viable 99% of the time. It’s ludicrous to watch this happening. I can see if it was just two sides who disagree, that is, if it was that I just didn’t agree with Trump, but it’s not that at all. Trump is blatantly lying almost all the time, blathering almost incoherently a lot of time, and worse, abusing his power. How is this happening? Can you imagine if Biden or Obama did anything like this!?!

My question is: how long do you think this can go on without an impeachment? Is anything that is happening an impeachable offense? Do you believe that Trump can continue like this with no repercussions for an entire term!?? Is there anything in history similar?!

Right now I’m watching our government turn into a freak show, with something new every day.

I have the exact same questions! How and why is all of this allowed when Trump and Elon (but I blame Trump; Elon is following orders) seem to be violating laws and policies. Or are they? Maybe they are not breaking laws? What is it? Are they or aren't they? Is the presidency really immune to consequences to breaking laws?

And if so many people are talking behind his back, then why aren't they joining forces to combat his orders?

Is it illegal or unethical for President Trump to advertise Teslas at the White House? As well as purchasing one and blatantly promoting Musk and his enterprises?

Expand full comment
JustRaven's avatar

*Supposedly* purchasing one... wouldn't be surprised if not only was it Musk's idea to run an ad for Teslas at the White House but also that in *payment* a Tesla or three would be gifted ....

And I assume you're asking a rhetorical question regarding the ethics (lack of) involved.

Rep. Jayapal said yesterday on NPR that the Republicans are trying to claim that this is a Continuing Resolution, like all the others, just designed to keep the government open without any changes. Jayapal said that is not true. She said it is a new bill and it will give the current powers-that-be much more control than they have now.

PBS’s Newshour coverage last night didn’t clarify, using both terms - resolution and bill. I tried reading the bill today but found it challenging.

Is this current thing passed by the House a CR or a Bill?

And does whatever it is or is called change the decision-making powers behind government programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security?

Thanks for any clarity.

Question: What's the current status of the special House elections coming up on April 1? Any chance of a surprise Democratic win? And what about that race of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, the same day?

Thanks, Gabe!

The two House special elections on April 1st in Florida are in districts that are simply too red to flip. In contrast, the House special election in upstate New York, which will be held this summer, should be a real race.

Hi Gabe, I'm from the Lou and enjoy your perspective. A compound question 1) When do you think republicans in each house will begin to abandon their blind allegiance to Trump, 2) what factors will be the Key Drivers for this exodus and 3) Estimate when this will occur i.e. a) 100 days, 2) 1 year, 3) 2 years. Thanks buddy.

What do we have to do to get rid of Citizens United? Elon Musk poured money into the 2024 election and now is trying to buy the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Is there any differentiation between the rules for 'donating' to nonpartisan vs partisan elections?

Back in February, Senator Murkowski commented on the congressional phone system call volume increasing from 40 calls per minute to 1600 calls per minute. There has been absolutely no coverage of congressional call volume since then. Is that number supposed to remain behind closed doors? Or is it available somewhere but nobody is looking for it? I know lots of people are calling their senators and representatives, but it would be nice to have some updated numbers. Your thoughts?

Quick update for March 14: I tried my daily calls this morning and in several instances (both the local and Washington offices for my Senators) I was unable even to get to the switchboard or automatic answering systems. I'm *hoping* that they're being inundated by folks calling about today's Senate vote on the Continuing Resolution and that it's not just a glitch in Verizon.

Gabe,

I know what a tariff is! But how do they work? If a widget costs $100.00 to import, what is the price with a 25% tariff?

Recently I purchased a sofa (made in China) with a retail price of $1,000.00. The wholesale price according to the shop owner (a friend) was $300.00. So how would a 25 % tariff impact the price? Remember, there are middlemen between the importer and the retailer.

Gabe, this is not an algebra question. I'm trying to understand the point at which a tariff is applied and how it impacts the final sale price of an item.

Thank you!

Steve

(Have been following you since your Middle school days after reading about you in the NY Times)

Gabe--Something I've been concerned about for a long time: Why didn't the media call out Trump's consistent lies from the start? I know that Politico, I believe, kept track of the number while he was in office, but I sincerely believe that his lies kept many folks from voting for Hilary Clinton. And I know that newspapers or the media are not a public service, but c'mon. And secondly, these recent statements (like annexing independent states, the Gulf of America, etc) are just deranged. Does anyone think Trump has dementia? I know there is some concern about Musk and his use of ketamine affecting his actions.

Washington Post kept a lie counter on Trump in his first term. I think the count reached over 30,000. It seems that the number of lies he tells has no negative impact on how he is viewed by his followers. His lies are strategic, because they play into voters' prejudices and beliefs they are afraid to voice themselves.

At least 3 years ago Brit Hume opined on Bret Baier that Biden was suffering dementia. And, we know how that turned out. I think many people, like myself, think Trump’s lies are like the moon is made of green cheese. I believe that the media are a public service. They failed when they abandoned objectivity.

Gabe ... Would you consider doing a deep dive into tariffs?? Where does the legal authority to to create and remove tariffs reside and how and why has this authority changed or been interpreted over time?

The current President appears to be fixated on tariffs and is imposing, differing or removing them on a whim. Is this his prerogative? Why ... or why not?

Paul Krugman came right out and said both Musk and Trump are crazy - and used their own words to make the case. So, what will it take to get anyone else to say so? Media? Democratic leaders? Bueller? Hello?

Related question: what will it take to get the Republican Party acknowledged as the criminal, fascist organization it’s become? (How long did it take the KKK to become a pariah movement?)

Does it appear that Trump is setting the stage for overt military action against Canada, up to and including invasion in emulation of the actions taken by Russia against Ukraine in 2022? If he does attempt to do this, what actions can the Congress, judiciary, or military take to forestall it? Is it likely they could move quickly and decisively enough to prevent his administration from making what would almost certainly be a catastrophic mistake? What might the remaining NATO powers do in such a situation, if Canada called for assistance as per treaty?

There are already campaign signs around here for Trump 2028. Is it possible for him to run again (age and health aside)?

Expand full comment
JustRaven's avatar

Currently no, but one of the Repubs has introduced a bill to allow a person who has served two NON-consecutive terms to run again for a third term. This bill if passed clearly cuts out both Clinton and Obama who each served two consecutive terms but enables a third term for Trump (45/47).
