The President’s Schedule At 11:15 AM, President Barack Obama will head over to the Agriculture Department headquarters to meet with agriculture and business leaders in an attempt to sell the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
The TPP is a trade deal among 12 Pacific Rim nations, negotiated in large part by the Obama Administration, which was sealed Monday, and now must be approved by Congress. The deal “reduces tariffs on various products, making them easier to sell overseas, supporters say…[while] critics say the free trade deal will make it easier for U.S. employers to move jobs to nations that have lower wages and fewer environmental regulations,” according to USA TODAY.
In the Agriculture Department event, the President will try to convince the corporate leaders assembled of “the benefits of the Trans-Pacific Partnership for American business and workers,” according to the White House.
At 12:45 PM, Obama will return to the White House for a closed-press lunch with Vice President Joe Biden in the Private Dining Room. Their lunch meeting comes as Biden mulls a presidential bid, which he will reportedly announce next week.
2016 Central
Race for the White House: Hillary Clinton Capitalizes on McCarthy’s Benghazi Comments Hillary Clinton’s first national TV ad will begin airing on cable Tuesday, and its topic is quite surprising. Just months ago, no one would have thought Clinton would be making an ad on Benghazi, her supposed greatest political liability.
Enter Kevin McCarthy. “Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable right? But we put together a Benghazi Special Committee. A select committee. What are her numbers today?” said McCarthy, currently House Majority Leader and the frontrunner to succeed John Boehner as Speaker of the House in a Fox News interview last week.
The ad is titled “Admits It,” and uses McCarthy’s comments to claim that the Republicans only formed the Benghazi Select Committee to politically destroy Clinton. Com
McCarthy walked back what he said in a Monday statement, saying, “The mission of the Select Committee on Benghazi is to find the truth – Period.” However, he can’t walk back from the truth: his comments have finally presented Clinton with an opportunity to go on offense about Benghazi, and could forever change the narrative on the 2012 attacks and their effect on the 2016 elections.
Race for the Senate: Hassan Enters New Hampshire Senate Race Gov. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) announced Monday that she would challenge Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) next year.
Hassan has served two terms as governor, and her Senate run creates an open race to succeed her in the State House. On the Republican side, Executive Councilor Chris Sununu, the son of former Gov. John Sununu, has already announced a gubernatorial campaign; no Democrats have announced, although potential candidates include Executive Councilor Colin Van Ostern and Portsmouth City Councilor Stefany Shaheen, daughter of Sen. Jeanne Shaheen.
The popular Hassan is a strong recruit for Democrats, seen as their best chance in New Hampshire as the party attempts to win the Senate majority back next year.
The race between Hassan and Ayotte, running for a second Senate term, will be close, as evidenced by a WMUR poll Monday, which found Ayotte at 45%, and Hassan just two points behind her, with 43%.
