Headline: Longtime Washington Post Editor Ben Bradlee Dies
Benjamin C. Bradlee, the former Washington Post executive editor who oversaw the paper’s groundbreaking coverage of Watergate and the Pentagon Papers, died Tuesday at the age of 93.
Bradlee is famed for his leadership at the Post when reporters Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward broke the story of the Watergate scandal, which led to the only presidential resignation in American history. The Post’s reporting during this period – Bradlee’s tenure presiding over the newsroom – is what marked the publication’s emergence as a leading paper. Because of the legacy of 1970’s and ‘80’s reporting, The Washington Post became the place to be for rising journalists well into the succeeding decades.
“The Post’s circulation nearly doubled while Mr. Bradlee was in charge of the newsroom — first as managing editor and then as executive editor — as did the size of its newsroom staff. And he gave the paper ambition,” reads an obituary published by The Post Tuesday, which Bradlee was interviewed for in 2000.
Following news of the longtime editor’s death, President Obama released a statement celebrating Bradlee, who he awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013: “For Benjamin Bradlee, journalism was more than a profession – it was a public good vital to our democracy. A true newspaperman, he transformed the Washington Post into one of the country’s finest newspapers, and with him at the helm, a growing army of reporters published the Pentagon Papers, exposed Watergate, and told stories that needed to be told – stories that helped us understand our world and one another a little bit better…The standard he set – a standard for honest, objective, meticulous reporting – encouraged so many others to enter the profession.”
