Oh Gabe plz check your patriarchy at the door. It was never Doug’s policy. At that point it was a mix of Harris and Biden. The other key point is that Harris has been speaking to more republicans and a wider audience (via podcasts). Many of these folks may not have been exposed to facts about 1/6 or the horrors of the orange guy’s attacks on our constitution and basic decency. She is making sure that they are exposed to his own words which are way beyond weird (maybe why they aren’t using the term so as not to sanewash his fascism. His words and tactics are straight out of the Mussolini and Hitler playbooks. I would think you’ve studied enough political science to recognize that. And you missed Harris’ biggest issue in the poll — other. I wonder what that is but could it be her gender, her race, her relatively recent experience with immigrants in her own family.
It seems to me that you not pick everything with her and remain relatively quiet about the orange guy’s mental descent into never never land. Did you even mention his fox interview?
Gabe, IMO you are way too critical of Harris when you wrote, “But her campaign — after briefly rowing in her own direction — is now, once again, a continuation of Biden’s.” It would be ridiculous for her to ignore the increasingly obvious danger of Trump simply for the sake of trying to create greater separation from Biden.
Very disappointed in your handling of Harris’-Baier interview. No one man (or woman) can destroy democracy. But a series of candidates of the caliber of Trump & Harris, will destroy it.
I wonder if Harris's strategy with reaching out historically republican voters isn't about trying to gain more votes from undecideds, but keeping republican voters home.
Flipping a Trump vote to a Harris vote is already a tall order, but on top of that, any republican you convince will most likely vote with a split ticket, voting republican down ballot.
Maybe the strategy then is to convince enough people who will usually vote for republicans while not being invested in the rest of the races on their ballots that Trump isn't a good candidate. Therefor regain the House and perhaps manage to hold on to the senate which is a tall order for Democrats this cycle
Oh and you may need to explain your footnote. I think you’re saying that the republican candidates won over dems and independents by 2.7% if you include all the races held in 2022. That may well be so but I don’t know that dems are disputing that— at least none that I’ve read or followed. The democratic message has been that the republicans did NOT get the overwhelming majority of actual seats (primarily because of horrible candidate selection) that they were predicting. They have exactly 8 more seats (3 vacancies) than dems but have significant problems wrangling their caucus to vote as a solid block (unlike Pelosi’s ability to wrangle her caucus). The republicans have little interest in actually governing because their general intent is to dismantle the federal government and it has been for a long time (see Dr Heather Cox Richardson’s history of the Republican Party and the rise of movement conservatives —since Bill Buckley). That said that was a pretty snarky remark for a guy who readers seem to claim is non biased. (FYI I don’t think you’re not biased and you’ve changed into one of those gotcha reporters…unlike when I started reading your stuff way back when you started in STL)
Hello Gabe, I have appreciated and enjoyed your WutP 'Blurb' for many years, since I discovered you in/about ~'16 or '17. Appreciate your being mostly unbiased, very refreshing, especially as most seem to be more polarized than ever. However, I will not be among those who 'Upgrade to Paid' ever, we just do not have discretionary funds available, I wish you the best, and will continue to read what is available to those of us who are poor. Please note that 4 requests to do the aforementioned in an email appears to me to be excessive, almost to the point of desperation. Disheartening to say the least. Cheers.

Excellent observations, Bev.

Sorry yes you did mention it. I apologize for failing to remember

As always, thank you for great reporting Gabe.

Good job
