Your angle on the Greenland/Panama thing is a great demonstration of why this newsletter is valuable. UNlike the legacy media folks whose breathless headlines you displayed, you're correctly pointing out that Trump just kinda doesn't like "ruling things out" and that him not ruling out taking over the Panama canal when randomly asked about it by a reported isn't really news.

Frankly, I think you're putting lipstick on a pig here--little of what the president-elect is doing now is remotely what we have traditionally considered presidential. You are giving him a pass.

On the Laken Riley bill--I take your point about the Democrats realizing their approach to immigration has not reflected the will of many citizens. But this bill allows, as Hakeem Jeffries pointed out, for the deporting of people who have been accused but not convicted of a crime. I will be surprised if there is not going to be some litigation around this in the future.

What we should be doing is seeking some kind of comprehensive immigration reform, something a majority of Americans have consistently called for. Instead, we get laws like this or proposals for mass deportations (the talk of which has suddenly dried up--wonder why?). Such reform would be much more presidential and much more useful for the country than what we have now.

I served in an armored division in the Gulf War. I don't think it's appropriate to make light of any possibility of military action.

We are not invading Greenland.

Given that I am in the reason (from my White House meeting in July 2019 as CEO of Tanbreez Mining Greenland) for Trump's initial impulse, I think I've got some basis for suggesting the world chill out. The USA and Greenland can do great things together, with the USA "buying" Greenland. (In this video interview, I mistakenly say July 2020 instead of July 2019):

I agree completely. There is entirely too much lipstick being used here - on all subjects.

No one is holding the listless Democrat’s feet to the fire for their bullshit listlessness, for Harris’s asinine comment about democracy standing as she smilingly handed over control to the fascists and Nazi wannabes. What about the astonishing ‘let's work together’ appeasements of Jeffries and Schumer? What about calling Biden out for his “you’re all on your own now” attitude and for disappearing from sight most of the time? What about Obama, the Clintons and Harris too? None of them understand leadership. Not a one. They ALL have failed us.

I too served and all this infuriating talk about attacking our allies is beyond wrong. And once again, it’s “aw, golly, that's just trump spouting off”. Think about the bigger picture Gabe. Do you realize how utterly destabilizing this talk is? It’s not trump just being trump. It is globally destabilizing. All of our allies now know for certain that the leader of America will threaten to invade if he’s not treated like a king. I hope the rest of the free world grows a spine and forms a strong alliance against this Hitler wannabe fascist bully. They’ll have to in order to survive the next four years.

What the billionaires are doing isn’t accepting how things are, they are obeying in advance solely to try and save themselves and if that succeeds, start raking in their share of what trump’s corrupt admin plans to take from the rest of us. They are all planning on dividing up the country to steal everything they can.

None of this normal Gabe. None of it. A third voted for him. A third. That’s not a majority. Trump being elected again was not because the majority wanted him as you implied but the result of a mix of very good, long term, very effective, right wing, hate and fear based propaganda, our spineless legal system headed by a man who helped trump every chance he could (Garland), a pathetic Democratic Party led by Corporate Democrats, and Harris’s limousine liberalism.

Hopefully you will return to looking at things as they really are instead of glossing over the ugliness that is in plain sight and about to be unleashed on all of us, including our allies.

Thanks, Gabe, for the thorough analysis. Regarding the diminished opposition from the Democrats I am understanding much better the current mood of the country. Many in my circle are academics who don’t seem to quite get what is going on. If you have enjoyed stable and gainful employment your entire working life I believe you really can’t understand what many in the working class are up against. I hope the Trump administration can do something substantive for this group, yet I have my doubts. Trump is still really Trump. Ego and fealty above all.

Gee Gabe I guess the dems in Congress are not uniformly in opposition but there are a hell of a lot of us out here who are definitely still in opposition to the orange guy and all his nefarious sidekicks. Since the republicans seem ready to confirm the male clowns to the cabinet but somehow not the women who really don’t appear to be any worse selections and even think they can surpass a filibuster I’m guessing they bought off Collins with chair of the senate appropriations committee. Don’t know what they’ve promise or how they’ve threatened Murkowski. These are all clearly unqualified or have financial misdeeds in their backgrounds except maybe Rubio. The orange guy is trying to distract us from these totally irresponsible appointments by talking smack to Canada Denmark Greenland and Panama. He is also trying to make people who believe cabinet members should be qualified and free from scandal terrified about what will happen when they are in office. And where do you expect there to be guardrails to prevent the total perversion of the cabinet?

Well apparently they did not buy off Collins or

Murkowski at least not when it doesn’t matter (the nefarious sidekicks are pretty much aligned in their efforts to destroy our military

Gabe, first great reporting as always. Second , studying Italian has made me a stickler for good grammar. "Anyway" is an adverb and as such has no plural form.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, "anyways" is an adverb and its earliest use is from 1225. It is a variant of "anyway", which is more commonly used.

Probably from the archaic word anywise. At best it sounds like slang.

RE: Greenland This would be an opportunity for the U.S. to propose that the residents of Greenland (I am assuming that the people who actually live there may differ from those who are Danish citizens) choose the fate of the island. Pit hygge over opportunity! Wouldn’t the world be a better place if we moved toward a democratic resolution for contested lands?

Great article! The media needs to start asking Trump about his plans for whatever zany thing he comes up with WITHOUT putting words into his mouth. Example: he promised to lower grocery prices, but now he’s walking that back. If the press had asked him how he was going to lower prices, in his own words, voters might have started seeing that he’s all smoke and mirrors.
