Thanks so much for speaking the truth. This is not a joke anymore. Our "leader" is speaking like a carnival barker. Our government is being run by the ultra rich acting like the Mafia. We, the people, have to stand up for truth and justice and may have to lay down our lives. I'm ready.

"As politics becomes more ephemeral, nobody wins — even the winners. Onto the next viral moment, and then the next."

Thank you Gabe for your reporting.

I couldn't bring myself to watch this disgusting performance. It's sickening. What I would like to know from these Trump supporters is - if the goal is to make America great again - please explain - when was America Great? And great for who?

I liked Trump's claimed that the Biden administration spent "$8 million to make mice transgender." I can imagine it is hard to get those male mice in little dresses and high-heels.

The spending was on developing transgenic mice - completely different than transgender mice. TRANSGENIC mice have had a gene added or deleted from their genome so scientists can study what that gene does.

Also about 150 year-olds receiving Social Security money: part of the reason we have 150 yr olds on the books is the COBOL programming language. When a death date entry is missing, this antiquated computer language defaults to 1875. And these folks aren’t necessarily getting benefits. A computer whiz like Elon should know this.

Me too, but I wonder why we would assume the mice would transition from male to female. Most of the dozens of trans students I’ve had in class are women transitioning to men.

It sounds like you had an interesting perspective, watching the audience rather than the performer. And it was a performance - by a two bit con-man turned cult leader. I did not watch; I experienced the performance with Steve Schmidt who gave a play-by-play accounting and analysis. It was more tolerable that way, less of an assault on my senses. Thank you for your analysis and perspective. You always make sense. I was struck by your description of Scalise banging on his table, it made me think of Kruschev with his shoe - unhinged.

Thanks for this cogent and sensible review of Trump’s performance. (Everything he does is a performance. And not in a good way. Ever.)

Thank-you for your impressions of last night's address. I like numbers and decided to look at just how many people didn't vote. According to the numbers I could find, "approximately 89 million, or 36% of the country's voting-eligible population did not vote." That is more votes then either candidate received. (By the way, I did not watch the address, I don't like reality TV.)

It’s not surprising that a majority of those who watched the president’s speech gave it high marks. Most of us couldn’t bring ourselves to watch it. Why waste an hour and a half on a continuous stream of falsehood?

You didn’t mention the times Democrats laughed at the President’s statements. Trump and his claims are a joke here and around the world.

Wow Gabe. I felt like I sitting center front in the hollowed space reading your report. I watched an episode of “ All Creatures Great and Small,” last night and it was refreshing seeing kindness and respect for at least an hour! But of course twitter and instagram were full of their images and Trumps pathetic rhetoric; nothing has changed.

Trump boasted, told multiple lies and Vance and Johnson were reliably pathetic. I suppose I dislike them more than I thought possible as they are so hypocritical. They claim to be Christian and yet they nod and smile when they know he is lying and grin despite his disrespect and contempt he leashes out so he can garner a reaction from the moronic republicans, who know in their hearts he is an

Since Trump started his first campaign, when we heard the filth about grabbing women, when he made fun of a handicapped reporter and then proceeded mocking others and pathologically lying without any regard for decency OUR COUNTRY HAS CHANGED. WE ARE NO LONGER MORAL, EMPATHETIC OR GENUINE.

Thank you for this reporting, Gabe. I admire that you can report with such tact, and include facts and historical info exactly where needed in your reports. I watched the speech and was incensed by congressional democrats who sat quietly and played nice while Trump spewed nonsense and lies and exaggerated claims, and even trashed Biden and the dems like a bratty child all through his clown show - with Mike Johnson in the background nodding and smirking like a deranged Bobble-head doll the entire time. I don’t know what was worse: watching all the well-behaved dems or watching and listening to Trump and his Bobble-head lackeys. I know there are some who are fighting, but not enough by any means! I will NEVER understand the complacency happening in congress at this time as Trump and his horribly unqualified cabinet members along with whatever Musk is, dismantle our government.

Very sad to see my fellow Americans hating and attacking each other. Nobody wins… except maybe our actual enemies.

On an approval poll of viewers, I don't think enough can be said for how skewed that data will be when a large portion of Americans refuse to watch because they know they will be treated to 90 minutes of the lies, gross exaggerations and straight gaslighting that has been well-documented in Trump's first 4 years. Trump voters in my own family refuse to watch him speak. But thanks to you and the rest of the press for ingesting it all and writing about it so I don't have to.

I’m not a political analyst or insider, just a stay at home mom of toddlers, so I could be completely wrong about this—has MAGA really figured anything out, or did they just do the most obvious (and stupid) things? So obvious (and stupid) that no other adult with a fully developed brain would ever seriously consider undertaking such behavior and tactics. I watch C-SPAN and my mother-of-toddlers brain starts exploding. It’s not hard for anti-MAGA. Use your big mama voice because we have already asked nicely 500 times.
