Thank you for this! It is exciting to see signs of life in congress. I was actually a little relieved yesterday when I read that Trump withdrew his UN ambassador pick over concern for her house seat. It feels mostly like he is just ignoring, and working around congress. But if he's worried about his majority, then it seems they must still have a little power... or at least he's still worried about the optics of going directly against them...
Thanks for the info Gabe. You are amazingly diligent and resourceful, but unfortunately this does not give me much hope. Project 25 is in full swing and they are wanting to dismantle everything most folks hold dear, The universities in America are the best in the world and are under threat. RFK has fired 10,000 …and measles continues to spread.
Elon Musk is buying elections and law firms cave under with threats from Trump….no, I do not have hope.
And Pete, the dude who is as much a friggen liar as Trump still has a job
I appreciate Gabe's in depth anaylsis on this sort of under-reported activity.
That said, these subtle and minor deviations from the MAGA agenda seem as effective as peeing on a forest fire.
We now have a billionaire willing to fund primaries against any Republican who dares stick their head above the ramparts. There are no 'adults in the room' to argue against the carnage Trump and his Project 2025 minions are enacting. By the time the mid-terms roll around, there will be a decade's worth of damage to fix, and much of it can't be fixed - i.e. deaths from preventable causes, a planet warming even faster.
Gabe would you consider providing a platform for reps to make long-form arguments to the public? This newsletter is the closest I get to actually seeing what our Congress does and I'd like to see more.
Your in-depth, analytical & insightful reporting is excellent reading. I’ve recommended WUTP to many family/friends. Independents (being those that can thoughtfully evaluate many facets of major & minor issues) would agree that the politically middle-to-left need to take a greater leadership role. To understand the analysis “peeing on a forest fire” OR peeing on a Tesla, is to say that not enough is happening to counter MAGA. Independents need to urgently (& prior to 2026 elections) .. take a greater leadership role!
Thank you, thank you, Gabe for doing this kind of research and reporting. You are unique and your work is immensely important. I’m happy to continue reading and supporting you and I hope WUTP keeps growing and reaching larger audiences
Right now, this moment, I pounded the sofa arm so hard that I nearly damaged my fist. The most recent news update about the second big lawfirm caving in (and selling us all down the river, and inviting more extortion) just sent me over the edge.
Meanwhile, my spouse is in the next room signing his tiny lawfirm on to an amicus brief filed in support of Perkins Coie against (current) President Trump's illegal executive orders targeting specific lawfirms. He has also offered to volunteer with Oregon's Attorney General's office, as he has done in the past. Please tell me there are more lawyers in this country who are principled , and care more about the rule of law than they do about money and power. Honestly, if those with actual legal knowledge and vast resources cannot stand up to Trump's blatantly illegal actions, who can???
I'll do my miniscule part by writing a strongly worded letter to the two morally bankrupt lawfirms (Paul, Weiss and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom) telling them how much their cowardice and greed severely damages our Justice System and will further sink all of us into the abyss of an autocracy or dictatorship or kakistocracy or whatever the hell we're headed towards. I hold no illusions that my letter will sway these lawyers who seem to have abandoned their professional oaths, but still, I will write. I would be heartened if some (dare I hope, all?) of their associates resigned and started their own firm. That is still possible in this country. I will also be writing a letter of admiration to the lawfirm of Munger, Tolles who is representing Perkins Coie in their fight against Trump's illegal executive order.
I hope and pray that American lawyers will stand against this administration that wants to dictate who they must represent and hire, and what causes they must take on pro bono. If Trump has his way with the US legal community (and with the courts and elections), what hope does anyone have to seek justice in this country?
Congress—alive & well, not quite there yet but … hope floats. We need the serious minded, hard working middle from both parties & houses. Thank you for making us aware of the signs that this is happening.
Thank you for this issue, Gabe. I do appreciate your perspectives and the sleuthing you do to bring us news that doesn't get much oxygen elsewhere, although to be fair, there's a large blowtorch destroying the internal workings of our formerly functional federal agencies that is sucking up all the available oxygen in the media these days.
It is nice to know, that beyond all the shouting, Congress continues to move along, as it pretty much has, over the centuries. They ultimately control the purse strings, not the Executive Branch.
What they want will make it into law, when the stakes are high enough, for them.
Thank you for the verification it is still happening.
Good news, and knowing it is happening gives a little much-needed hope.
On another topic: What do you make of the fact that today's NY Times (and probably other "legacy media" seem to have dropped coverage of the Signal story?

Maybe, just maybe, there’s a bit of hope to hold onto.

If there is humor to be found in these dire times, perhaps it is in these clips:

Thanks Gabe.
Thank you. This gives me hope and makes me a little less angry at GOP legislators. I know it's hard to stand up in the face of a bully.
