Thank you for this great analysis of the CR bill. I swear, there are so many spinning plates in the air, it’s great to have your explanation.

Also, I think as soon as Trump becomes President again, he’s going to get really tired of Musk taking all of the attention away from him. That should be an interesting time. It makes me wonder if Musk has more on Trump than billions of dollars in donations.

Trump has a long history of fall-outs with former supporters who didn't behave or got too much attention. And given how fond Musk is of himself and his opinions, I suspect it won't take too long for this to happen with him too.

Of note, the house can elect anyone as speaker. He or she need not be an elected congressman. So Elon Musk could be elected as speaker of the house.

“Come January 20, for better or for worse, musk seems poised to wield a lot of power over American governance. It will be up to him whether he wants to use it to advance an unserious political project, or one that could actually address some of the flaws he’s diagnosing.”

Are you kidding me? That’s it? You are treating this unelected civilian like he’s going to be part of our government. No alarm over the fact that an unelected civilian interfered and shut down our government? No analysis of this completely bonkers move? No calling out the entire Republican Fascist Party for caving on this? Are you really okay with musk calling the shots?

Is everybody else here okay with this?

I am not. Not by a long shot. This out of control egomaniac was NOT elected. Why is everyone acting like he was and he just might do some good and “actually address some of the flaws he’s diagnosing”. I feel like I’m in bizarro land.

I’m with you—I can’t believe an unelected zillionaire is taking such power.

Gabe like much of the mainstream media downplays the crisis and talks about Musk maybe doing some good. The only good musk will do will be for himself and his businesses— so the can save money freed from regulations that protect us and check his ruthlessness

At 3:48 p.m. on Wednesday, a co-anchor of “Fox & Friends” announced that he had spoken with Trump, and that the president was against the CR.

Oops. Something's missing. I'm sure you had it in other places, but where did the -elect go? I know he's acting like it, but he ain't president yet. Or as a Monty Python skit might accurately describe a President Joe Biden seemingly already put out to the curb in a cart- "I'm not dead yet."

Sadly, Biden has disappeared and Trump is sucking up all the oxygen in the room.

“Dear Donald Trump, your malfeasance is no longer shocking, but it remains deeply revolting. You campaigned as a champion of the forgotten man, but your actions scream betrayal. You’re not a leader; you’re a masquerading fraud, content to bask in the reflected glow of Elon Musk’s wealth and influence while abandoning the very people who believed in you.”

ELON MUSK’S PUPPET PRESIDENT: HOW TRUMP BECAME A BILLIONAIRE’S MARIONETTE AT AMERICA’S EXPENSE

When a ruthless tech mogul pulls the strings and a so-called populist bows down, America spirals into chaos—leaving red-state voters to pay the price.

Did anyone really expect anything except CHAOS? So suck it up folks the people who voted for T and his nefarious sidekicks brought this about. Hope they enjoy the ride. But those who care about democracy better gird their loins for the fight against fascism and kleptocracy and destruction by incompetence. It ain’t gonna be fun but it will be the fight of our lives.

A government shutdown could have the theoretical DOGE be able to look into each of the tacked-on bills and have the recommended to file separately. But that nearly a month away. Until then, we have the X-Speaker of the House at the Ready. :)

Hi all, I sent a ResistBot email to our useless reps and senators regarding Elon Musk’s outsized influence over our government. I know it’s an uphill battle, but his “ruling from Twitter” on the CR to avoid/approve a shutdown was just plain wrong.

Please consider signing/sending it to your reps in your state.

Thanks for your reporting. Is it true that Marjorie Taylor Greene wants Elon Musk as Speaker of the House? What kind of horror are we looking at for the next 4 years?

Expand full comment
Gabe Fleisher's avatar

Yes - when I wrote that headline this morning, I meant it more as a joke, but Greene and a few other GOP lawmakers have now called for Musk to be speaker. Technically, that would be possible, but still deeply unlikely to happen.
