Nah, he's the president. If he doesn't have the restraint or executive function to control his communication, he shouldn't be president. If you randomly yelled upsetting things at your friends and family it would likely damage your ability for them to trust and take you seriously. We should hold the president to the same standard.
Training people to not take news and the words of the president seriously degrades our discourse and makes us less capable citizens for sustaining a democracy
Those students in desks flanking him, have uniforms on, typically representative of private schools not public education-he never is, has been, will be, considered as making America great👎🏻
Gabe, I’ve been following you since your middle school years. Your reporting is amazing and it calms me because it’s factual and brings in history when needed to basically say, ‘this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this.”
With that being said, I’m alarmed at the “normalcy“ you’re creating when you report about this administration. What’s been happening since January 20 is shocking and I’m thinking (I’m no historian) unprecedented in some ways - pardoning January 6 rioters, “hiring“ Elon Musk and his hacker boys to tinker around in government data systems, spouting off on social platforms to millions of followers with lies at worst and rhetoric at best, appointing a cabinet that clearly is unqualified to help properly steer the American people through possible major life-altering mandates - to name just a few of the current events that are scaring me, to say the least.
I’m asking if it’s possible to be an unbiased reporter who carefully toes the line between personal beliefs and factual reporting (which I admire that you do) AND who depicts the shock value when appropriate for some of what’s happening. I’m not saying be a Rachel Maddow (who is brilliant and who I also like to listen to) or to report so that I like the reporting, but I’m having trouble thinking that you’re this ambivalent and seemingly comfortable with what’s happening with this administration.
Mister Fleisher, I've been a follower of yours since just after your first NPR interview. I have a good deal of respect for your reporting, for how you try very hard to toe the line between 'unbiased' and 'neutral' - and for your understanding that that is a line to begin with. So I mean this with considerable due respect when I say:
Say sike right now.
You, as a politics reporter, of /all people/, should know that nobody is ever "just" asking questions. "Just" asking questions is how Joe Rogan normalized the acceptance of conspiratorial thinking in white men aged 18-25 - and not only them, but the demographic breakdown is notable. "Just" asking questions is how trans people went from a nothing issue to one of the most outsized points of national debate, fully at their expense. "Just" asking questions is how the Overton Window shifts, it's how the pale is expanded into the beyond, it's how things we decided were unacceptable cruelties or completely off-the-wall insane ideas become palatable. There are few rhetorical tools more powerful than a well-placed question.
If someone raises the question, "is it okay to stop feeding the hungry", the answer can only be a swift, decisive rebuke. If someone raises the question, "is it okay to erase the history of BIPOC Americans from government websites", the answer can only be a swift, decisive rebuke. If someone raises the question, "is it okay if we get rid of the Department of God Damned Education", the answer can only be a swift, decisive rebuke. Forget entertaining the idea, even to *ignore* the idea is a dereliction of our duties as public members of a society that we care about.
So, I suppose this is all to say, no, we can't ignore the inane and sleep deprived suggestions of our octogenerian president. I'm happy to sacrifice my blood pressure if it means that I'm not caught by surprise when an old man decides that his midnight musings were fully in earnest.
Who will be left when they come for you? Nothing is normal in this administration and yet you continue to try to make it sound like just another day in paradise. Maybe it does seem normal to you because the cometariate has always sane washed him. (And gave a good and decent man a a damned good president not one inch of credit). So how
Come everything Biden did was
Evil but every wild assed statement by this guy is just normal for
Gabe never said or implied that anything Biden did was evil. Bev, I wish you would consider trying to leave more substantive comments, as other folks do.
Ok well maybe evil is a bit harsh. But he never seemed to think Biden did anything that was right. And he consistently tries to make this administration seem like it’s more normal than not. Of course comparing this to the Nixon administration isn’t any great compliment. Frankly it’s hard to make substantive comments about nonsubstantive analyses. One last thing—frankly I think the AP deserves a hard White House pass lots more than Gabe. That said I won’t be leaving more comments as I’ve decided not to renew my paid subscription.
I'm sorry to hear that, as I think Gabe is top-notch. Today's post was pretty critical of Trump, basically saying that he has no actual plan (or legal authority) to close the Department of Education. I'm just not sure how Gabe was normalizing Trump.
Start with the headline and comments about how he’s asking questions in public that Nixon asked in private. Also implied that maybe him “asking questions” might even be a good thing as it provides insight to his thinking. That is normalization. Sorry but Gabe used to be a good source of info nobody else paid attention to. I started following him when he was a youngster and we both lived in the St. Louis area. Now I just think he’s kinda arrogant and somewhat disingenuous about the threat this administration is to our constitution And gee did he really have to get another dig in a Biden? I understand wanting some independent news sources with access to the White House but sorry Gabe is not in the same league with the AP. Defend Gabe all you want but I’m not going to support him every time he gives an example of how another president did the same thing.
I just recently found this site so I am not familiar with Gabe’s editorials about Biden. However, it has been my experience that folks have a very hard time changing political parties. The exemption to Trump has only been my female friends ( and not all of them) because they are so repulsed by Trump and his disgusting remarks about women, his past sexual assaults which repulsive men have normalized, and finally his appearance. Most women do find spray tanned men abhorrent. Ha
Good reporting Gabe! We (Americans in the U.S.) need to be working on better education approaches for our children, as the stats show that we have been declining in effectiveness. Perhaps more local control is an experiment we should embrace, but as you rightfully point out, the transition requires a plan. Details regarding: transfer of federal funds, State's minimum obligations, insurances of proper use of funds, etc. all need to be addressed in a sound plan, worked out and approved by Congress (with appropriate consultation). If Congress wanted to see how Norway achieves great education results they should get prepared to learn that Norway guarantees: free higher education, 8 weeks of paid vacation per year, 35 weeks of paid parental leave, free universal health care and runs social programs to result in: 1/3 of the U.S. poverty rate, 1/3 of the U.S. infant mortality rate, nearly 1/10 of our murder rate, etc. And by the way, The average personal tax rate in Norway is 38.7% compared to 37% in the U.S. So let Congress chew on the reality that education requires a wholistic view programs affecting your society, as struggling single mom's with 2 jobs, tons of debt, medical issues that cause bankruptcy, etc. will need those States to really broaden the scope of "educmation".
Gabe, nice that you got to the event but, as you note, this was another publicity effort with little substance and little chance of going further- as such I didn't need all the details
Of course you are getting a press pass to Trump. You have nothing bad to say about his disgusting behavior. Your comment about “enfeebled predecessor” pissed me off.
RE: Trump's autopen remarks -- if it ever comes to pass that signing by autopen is invalid, does that mean my stimulus check signed with his (auto-penned) signature during Covid is invalid? Just musing to myself...
Trump only has 9.3 million followers on his social media app and yet his words are constantly quoted by journalists giving him a much larger audience. Even when, what you’re suggesting, isn’t anything. Why, then, does he continue to get amplified?

You’re right, he shouldn’t be president.
Not to mention his unqualified choices for his cabinets. The press secretary is an embarrassment

You referred to Biden as "enfeebled". Is that your personal opinion or do you have medical proof of this? It sounds like you were editorializing.
He has a brain! That’s all the proof anyone needs to make such a statement!!
Vote Blue you fucking idiot!!!
Not today, Ronald! 😂
Congratulations on getting credentialed.

I thought the reporting was even handed. And I do NOT like tRump .
I cannot believe that is a real photo of Trump with children! And so many!! Did they give all of them Sharpies??
