How do you wake up every morning and not immediately crawl back into bed because of the ways in which our democracy is being dismantled before our very eyes? I'm a 22-year-old college student, so similar to you, I have grown up in this hellscape of a political climate. I'm sure you are looking for substantive questions about American politics in which you can give us your nuanced insight, but I really need some advice, Gen-Z to Gen-Z. What keeps you going? What gives you hope? What helps you feel like we will get out of this?
Think about the people who lived during the 1920’s and who saw no hope. It was a world where the Supreme Court was so out of touch they upheld the State’s right to prohibit interracial integration in education (Berea v Kentucky), Government thought their mission was to grab children from mothers (the Bread and Roses Strike in Lawrence, Mass)
From that sprung a fiery dissent in Berea from Justice Harlan Stone that would be the underpinning of Brown v Board of Education. The government mission miss would lead to the Roosevelt administration and worker protection laws.
Did progressives of the 1900-1930 have some wins? Sure, a woman’s right to vote; the idea of an income tax. Just like the ACA/Obamacare,etc today.
I wouldn’t throw in the towel, the world will come around, people will gradually realize that this is not the role they want government to play.
1. We ( 77 Million of us) voted in the Trump/Vance ticket, who fully and comprehensively told us exactly what they planned to do in office. No Surprises.
2. We are in a unique Tri-Fecta ( White House, Congress, Supreme Court) which will
(hopefully) become even stronger a) following the tragic murder of Right WIng Leader CHarlie Kirk, and b) following the upcoming off-year elections in 2026.
3. Trump may well have the opportunity to select/appoint 2 New Supreme Court Justices ( to replace likely retiring Clarence Thomas, and the diabetic ailing Justice Sotomajor).
If the Supreme Court rules Trump’s IEEPA tariffs are unlawful, what would the remedy look like?
The forward-looking relief is easy: A court order that enjoins Trump from issuing any further IEEPA-based tariffs. But are the parties looking for backward-looking relief, like repayment or damages or reimbursements or anything like that?
I am very disappointed with our congressional Democrat leadership, especially with Hakeem Jeffries. I understand the need for him to stay within legislative protocols in his leadership of the house of representatives. However I do not understand why, as the top elected Democrat in the country, he does not use the power of this office and his voice to comment on Trump‘s atrocities of the day. Why do you think he is being so risk averse?
Poland and now Romania have reported Russian drones in their airspace in the past few days. This seems to be a pretty significant escalation of tensions between Russia and NATO countries. What's the latest NATO (and Russian) response?
Every so often, Trump sues a media company for defamation, most recently the New York Times. Given that the President is a public figure, and the 1st amendment protections of the press, why aren't these law suits immediately thrown out by the presiding judges? The law suits seem to be another form of Trumpian extortion.
Why is there no outrage in Congress or internationally about US armed forces attacking small civilian boats in Caribbean international waters, killing the crews on board? By what authority can the President authorize these extra-judicial killings? How do we even know these boats are carrying drugs intended for sale in the US? Drug trafficking may be a crime, but like all crimes it must be prosecuted in a court of law with evidence and due process for the accused.
hi ya, Gabe, trying to understand where subsidies and other tax favors for renewable energy compare to those designated for fossil fuel energy. less of a value judgement and more on the policy side of what is the magnitude of each, types offered (tax credits like solar, rebates like the soon-to-be-gone EV, incentives to industries (green and oil/gas)), and whatever else might best be thought of as a whole of government choice to favor one means of production/storage/distribution over another. thanks!
Is it really true that no charities, including the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, can no longer bring injured children into the US for treatment due to Trump halting visitor visas?
Trump's birthright executive order is now in the District Court in Class Action status. Could you please give me an update and when it might reach the Supreme Court...and your view and what the Court might decide.
Did the Trump Administration significantly revise down the 12 month job numbers to set the stage for higher job growth claims in the future? Push the blame to the Biden administration and establish an artificially low starting point. You could claim much higher growth going forward. The current administration has shown a propensity to rejigger numbers in other areas.
Do you know why ICE agents wear masks? Are they embarrassed that someone might recognize them as they pull people off the street based on the color of their skin?
It's been curious transitioning from just a newsletter emailed to our personal inboxes to a blog where we can all see and interact with how others respond to your analyses. What do you make of how your readers responded to your articles about the aftermath of Orem? Reading through the comments on your political violence articles, I'm interested in how other readers are grappling with the tension of condemning murder and acknowledging the real harm that political rhetoric and policies can cause.
Regarding the upcoming midterms, you’ve written about the gerrymandering wars, but not much recently regarding election security. What do you know about how else the parties in power at the state level are maneuvering to secure the election, either in their favor or in integrity, if at all?
I'm not quite sure how to ask this question. I wonder how persuadable people are in this country, on "all sides," if *everything* is becoming a team sport, and that's what drives peoples' attention these days?
Where is all the tariff money, university money, and money coming from canceled research grants going?

1. They LEft is militant and out of control, doxxing and victimizing people enforcing the Laws of the US ( which were voted in by BOTH PARTIES).
2. Masks minimize effects of COVID, Tear Gas, and the vile odors emanating from many immigrants living quarters.

Why isn’t congress stopping all the atrocities the Trump administration is doing????
