Headline: Framework Reached in Iran Nuclear Talks
After over 12 years of U.S. negotiating with Iran over the latter’s nuclear program, Secretary of State John Kerry returns to America today with a framework in hand, agreed upon by all parties, and very close to a deal.
In the preliminary deal, negotiated by the U.S. and five world powers, and Iran, Iran agreed to restrict its nuclear program and open its nuclear facilities for international inspectors, in exchange for international economic sanctions on Iran being lifted if Iran keeps up its side of the deal.
Iran agreed to many of the limits the United States had argued for, including limitations on nuclear laboratories, mines, and mills, as well as a two-thirds reduction in centrifuge and a 97% reduction in uranium,
These limits will delay Iran’s “breakout” period, the time it would take to build a nuclear weapon, from the current two or three months to one year.
President Obama, who may find his major foreign policy achievement in this deal, hailed the agreement as a “historic understanding,” but congressional Republicans weren’t as complimentary. Many followed the lead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said in a statement that a deal with these parameters “would threaten the survival of Israel”.
Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) was among the most critical, saying “Neville Chamberlain got a better deal from Adolf Hitler. Under today’s deal, the United States and its international partners will dismantle the sanctions regime against Iran, while Iran, the world’s biggest exporter of terrorism, will be allowed to keep vast capabilities to make nuclear weapons.”
A deadline of June 30 was also agreed upon for a final deal, giving both sides almost three months to hammer out the details. One argument about sanctions or limitations could end the negotiations in failure.
